Pets bring joy and companionship, but they can also face unexpected emergencies that leave owners feeling helpless. As veterinarians, we’ve seen it all—and we’re here to help you be prepared. Here are the top 10 common pet emergencies, along with practical steps to take before rushing to your vet. Quick action can make all the difference!

1. Choking
If your dog or cat is pawing at their mouth, gagging, or struggling to breathe, they might be choking. Stay calm. For small pets, gently hold their mouth open and look for an obstruction. For larger dogs, a modified Heimlich maneuver (a firm upward squeeze just behind the ribcage) might dislodge it. Never stick your fingers in blindly—risking a bite is real.

2. Poisoning
Ingesting chocolate, antifreeze, or toxic plants like lilies can be deadly. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, or seizures. Call your vet immediately with details of what they ate and how much. Don’t induce vomiting unless instructed—some substances worsen on the way back up.

3. Severe Bleeding
A deep cut or torn nail can cause significant blood loss. Apply pressure with a clean cloth to slow the bleeding, then wrap it snugly. Head to the vet pronto—stitches or clotting agents might be needed.

8. Eye Injuries
Squinting or pawing at an eye after a scratch or foreign object needs a flush with saline (or water if that’s all you have). Don’t rub it—vet care can prevent vision loss.

9. Vomiting or Diarrhea (Severe)
Occasional upset is normal, but relentless vomiting or bloody diarrhea can dehydrate them fast. Withhold food for a few hours, offer small sips of water, and call your vet if it persists.

10. Allergic Reactions
Swelling, hives, or collapse after a sting or bite? Administer any vet-prescribed antihistamine if you have it, but don’t delay—shock can set in quickly.
