Watch out for grass seeds!

‘Tis the season … but it’s not always a jolly time for your pet. It’s the time of year we see lots of dogs, and a few cats, with problems caused by a grass seed.

We might find them in the eyes, as we did in the little guy in the photo above, or in the ear, up their nostrils or between their toes. They are always, at best, uncomfortable for your pet. At worst they are very painful and can cause serious long term damage. Left untreated or not removed they can lead to the loss of an eye, ruptured eardrums, abscess formation or even an Aural Haematoma.

Treatment can be tricky too, often needing an anaesthetic while we attempt to locate and safely remove the offending seed. There’s no protection really, other than prevention. Keep the lawn well mowed and try to keep your pets out of long, dry grass whilst on walks. Check your pet carefully after a walk in potential grass seed areas, paying particular attention to the eyes, ears and between the toes. Groom long-haired pets regularly to remove grass seeds from their coats and prevent them burrowing into the skin.
